Abbeyfield & Wesley is a registered charity and housing association which provides a range of affordable housing and support for older people. A member of The Abbeyfield Society, which was founded over sixty years ago and is a federation of societies throughout the UK and other countries, the underlying ethos is to provide a sense of community and alleviate loneliness.
The Guiding Principles are at the heart of the services provided by Abbeyfield & Wesley:
- Older people have an important role to play amongst their families, friends and in the community;
- Overcoming loneliness and insecurity can make all the difference to an older person’s well-being and quality of life; and
- Local people have an essential part to play in helping older people in the community.
Abbeyfield & Wesley has a range of housing.
- Palmerston, an award winning dementia home, in East Belfast.
- Nineteen supported sheltered houses situated across Northern Ireland, providing family style living for 7 – 10 residents and combining independence with a higher level of support than sheltered housing (including home cooked meals).
- Four sheltered schemes providing independent living with support.
As well as employing around 150 staff, a team of volunteers provide an important way of ensuring that residents maintain their links with the local community and help us help older people to live well in later life.
Why Abbeyfield & Wesley is supporting Boardroom Apprentice
“Having been through the process for the first time this year, Abbeyfield & Wesley have found the outside perspective that our Boardroom Apprentice brings to be very useful. We recognise that, for a board to be strong and innovative, there needs to be a programme of renewal.
“Providing an apprentice with experience of board meetings and the opportunity to learn from experienced trustees will assist with ensuring that the voluntary sector in Northern Ireland has a pool of potential candidates.
“In addition, during the apprenticeship year, the Abbeyfield & Wesley board will welcome input and new, fresh ideas from an apprentice.”
