The Northern Ireland Police Fund (the Fund) was set up in late 2002 as a government response to the Independent Commission on Policing for Northern Ireland, Patten Recommendation 87, as reviewed by John Steele on behalf of the Northern Ireland Office. Its remit is to provide support to police officers injured or killed as a direct result of terrorist attack, and their widows and families.
The Fund is an Arm’s Length Body of the Department of Justice and was established as Statutory Body in 2016 under the Northern Ireland Police Fund Regulations 2016 having been previously a Company Limited by Guarantee. The Fund is wholly-funded by the Department and the Board have been appointed by the Minister for Justice.
